Tourism boosts local economy

More people are visiting Worthing for the day and spending more money during their visit.  The latest figures published for 2009 by the Tourism South East research unit show 1.8million people visited Worthing for the day, up seven percent on the previous year.  The number of people visiting Adur is about the same 0.8million as 2008.

The amount of money people spend on their visit has also increased by five percent in Worthing, over £116million and a three percent increase in Adur up to almost £40million.

Thousands of people are employed in tourism related industries in Adur and Worthing.  In Worthing during the summer season the number of jobs increases from 2,397 up to 3,306 representing seven percent of the total employee workforce.  In Adur during the summer the number of jobs goes up from 533 to 764, which is about six percent of the total workforce.

The report also says that the number of people staying overnight in hotels, B&Bs and other accommodation has stayed about the same. 

Worthing Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, Bryan Turner said:  “It’s good to know that more people are visiting the town and enjoying all it has to offer and indeed boosting the economy.  Worthing is an attractive traditional seaside town that has plenty to offer visitors.  This is encouraging news for Worthing and Adur.”

Adur's cabinet member for regeneration, Jim Funnell said:  "It's good to know that Adur, with its small towns and villages attracts so many people and provides a substantial number of jobs in the district.
