Fernand Point, the acclaimed restaurateur often hailed as the father of modern French cuisine, once remarked that If the divine creator has taken pains to give us delicious and exquisite things to eat, the least we can do is prepare them well and serve them with ceremony. That simple truth would seem to be the founding principle behind Zizzi Restaurant in Haywards Heath.
With the senses overwhelmed by the plethora of culinary establishments to choose from in West Sussex (over 6,000 at the latest count) it would seem that there can be very little to distinguish one good restaurant from another.
That may be so. But it is the most subtle of differences, those exquisite, almost whimsical little touches, which distinguishes a great restaurant from a merely good one. In the list of really great eating places in the county, Zizzi has earned itself a place of distinction.
Nestled on the edge of South Road just before the junction with Haywards Road, the restaurant exudes the air of a family business that regards customer satisfaction as its Raison d'être.
As you enter the restaurant, the atmosphere is convivial and welcoming, the staff are attentive without being intrusive and the food... Well, the food is that subtle difference between a good restaurant and a great one.
Zizzi’s menu offers a truly hedonistic choice of courses that, quite frankly, is among the best you will find in any Italian restaurant. From finely prepared Asparagi to Calzon’Pizza, Fettuccine con polpette di spinaci, Ciabatta Pollo and Strozzapreti pesto rosso.
All of this is served with an excellent selection of fine wines and spirits.
Despite Zizzi Restaurant's five star aspirations, diners will find that prices are surprisingly reasonable. A meal for two served with a bottle of wine will set you back no more than £60. A bargain when compared to the prices of similar restaurants in London where a like-for-like meal could run close to £130.00.
One of the nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating. And, if you happen to be within the vicinity of West Sussex, there is no better place to experience this than at Zizzi’s.
